MAC Magic of the Night Collection: First Impressions and Swatches

Let’s gather around, all ye purple lovers! MAC’s highly anticipated Magic of the Night Collection launched October 18th online and will be in stores October 22nd. The collection features deep smoky hues for eyes and some bold colored tones for lips to make for an “enchanted evening out.” Today’s post will feature product images and information about the collection, and a few comparison swatches, though I will be adding some more comparison swatches for you at a later time.

Look at the stunning purple packaging!  Although I already own Please Me and All Fired Up in the regular black tube, I could not resist the beautiful metallic purple packaging. I picked up all four colors available and they are all uniquely diverse shades and beautiful in their own right. One of my favorite formulas from MAC’s line of lipsticks is of the matte variety so I am pleased that all but one shade is matte.

PLEASE ME -Muted-rosey-tinted pink [Matte]

ALL FIRED UP-Bright fuchsia matte [Retro Matte]

EVENING RENDEZVOUS-Deep reddish purple [Matte]

DARK SIDE-Deep burgundy [Amplified]

Perhaps the most highly anticipated product from the collection is the Oh Darling! In Extra Dimension Skinfinish. It has been described as a near perfect dupe for the ever-illusive Whisper of Gilt highlighter.  I do not own Whisper of Gilt and since I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it, I had to pick this one up for myself. There was quite a bit of buzz surrounding its release and I wanted to see what it was about.  It is described as a “liquid to powder highlighter that is designed to sculpt and highlight the face, leaving you with a luminous, well-defined finish.”

OH, DARLING is described as a Metallic Gold color. It has a beautiful MAC insignia print in the bottom and the Royal blue reflective metallic packaging makes this piece the star of the collection. It is so pretty I almost didn’t want touch it, but makeup is meant to be used, right? The texture is amazingly smooth and it provides great color payoff. It is very similar in color to some other highlighters I already own. Swatches to follow below.

Shaft of Gold is described as a deep bronze. It is a very warm golden color and the texture feels smooth to the touch. It is incredibly pigmented and with one swipe, I picked up a lot of color. This golden highlighter is not the least bit subtle, so if you want that incredible glow, this is for you! This is a shade that I will most likely use sparingly and with a fan brush.

Although I don’t own Whisper of Gilt, I pulled out some shades in my stash to compare it to. I did find that it was most similar to Anastasia Beverly Hills’ So Hollywood illuminator as far as tone and depth, however, Oh Darling! leans more towards a yellow golden. The other two colors swatched are Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar Bronze and Glow (the glow side swatched only) and Laura Mercier’s highlighter in Golden Nude.  Of all the colors swatched, MAC Oh Darling! is the most golden shade, while Laura Mercier’s Golden Nude is the least golden of the bunch. Each shade provides a beautiful luminizing effect and I can select each shade based on the desired intensity I want to achieve for the day. Overall, I am happy to have purchased the extra dimension skin finishes. Who could resist the limited edition holiday packaging? They have met my expectations in terms of color pigmentation and pay off and it’s a welcome addition to my ever growing beauty stash.

Thank you for stopping by today! I hope you found the swatches helpful.
