Tom Ford Beauty’s most recent release is the new Patent Finish Lip Color Pens ($52) that come in 8 new stunningly vibrant shades. When I saw images of it first appear online, I could hardly contain myself. When it became available at my local Tom Ford counter a couple of weeks ago, I made a visit to swatch and play with the colors in store and picked up two colors to share with you today.
“This new lip color innovation by Tom Ford combines a lip stain with an ultra-glossy finish. It’s presented in a unique, easy-to-use click-pen with a plush, sponge-tip applicator and delivers intense, vibrant color with long-lasting high shine. With its lightweight texture and flexible, comfortable wear, the color-true lip product gleams in decadent shades.” —via Tom Ford’s website
I picked up two shades in the colors Erotic and Exposed. Erotic is a vibrant pink while Exposed is a beautiful magenta berry. The packaging, though very minimalistic exudes glamour and luxury with the touches of gold that is consistent with Tom Ford packaging. I personally love the clicking mechanism. It takes a while to get it going. You may have to click about 10-12 times for it to initially begin, but once it does, it takes about 2-3 clicks for the next application. The plush sponge tip applicator makes applying a breeze. I feel it offers more precision and control in how much product you want to apply at any given time. Swatches to follow below.
The color saturation is absolutely beautiful! What you get is a true patent shine finish and I think these are quite possibly one the most intensely pigmented glossy formulas I’ve tried, and I have tried quite a bit. It delivers true and intense color saturation with every stroke. They sit comfortable on my lips and do not feel sticky whatsoever. I am the type of person that typically wears colors in the matte finish lip variety and this is a fun departure from it. It reminds me why rocking a high shine patent glossy lip is so much fun to wear. There is a slight vanilla scent that is not the least off-putting. While they are long lasting, they are not completely transfer-proof and can transfer while eating and drinking. Also, another word of caution is that they may slightly migrate outside of your lip lines, so wearing a lip liner is what I would recommend. The colors lasted on me for a good 3-4 hours before fading.
Above are swatches of all 8 colors for your viewing pleasure. L-R: Orchid Fatale, Red Corset, Ravageur, Exposed, Erotic, Infamy, Stolen Cherry, No Vacancy

Bottom line, the Tom Ford Patent Lip Colors are richly pigmented glossy colors that I have found to be clear winners. They are luxuriously and beautifully packaged, and deliver intense color saturation and long lasting shine. Is this a must? At $52 a piece, it is quite an investment. It really depends on your budget. I would recommend giving them a try if you can. To me, it was absolutely worth it. I am also enamored with the Honeymoon Eyeshadow Quad that I recently purchased, reviewed here, and I look forward to putting these items in heavy rotation this Spring.
