Hourglass Illume Sheer Color Trio Review and Swatches

Hourglass recently released a cream face palette called the Illume Sheer Color Trio in Sunset, $62. It is officially described as a cream-to-satin finish palette featuring a bronzer, blush and highlighter. It was originally released as a Barney’s New York exclusive though now it can be purchased at Sephora. I am a fan Hourglass face palettes, and when this product finally made its way in store, I promptly picked it up. I have been using the palette for the past two weeks and today I have my review and swatches to share with you.

The palette trio features a blush, bronzer, and highlighter housed in a compact very similar to other Hourglass packaging complete with a sizable mirror. You get .17oz of highlighter, and .21oz of blush and bronzer. I think it’s a pretty decent amount of product, and still perfectly portable and sleek enough to fit in your makeup bag.

Shade Descriptions  via the Hourglass website:

Neutral Bronzer- creates a natural tan, subtly bronzing and defining the face

Sheer Rose Blush-gives soft and universally flattering color to the cheeks

Champagne Highlighter-creates a luminous glow without heavy glitter or shimmer.

Benefits & Features via the Hourglass website:

  • Multi-tasking palette gives you all the essentials to define, brighten and highlight your face.
  • Imparts a soft, natural finish to the skin that remains fresh without blotching or streaking.
  • Weightless cremes are highly bendable and mistake proof, resulting in an effortlessly natural look.
  • Sheer formulas can be blended together to create custom shades that are buildable in color without feeling heavy on the skin.
  • Portable palette is ideal for travel and easy touch-ups during the day.

The shade descriptions are fairly accurate. The bronzer is a neutral tan that blends beautifully into my skin helping to softly sculpt and define my features. I think the bronzer shade would most likely work for light to medium skin tones. The blush shade included is absolutely beautiful, this rosy hued blush immediately brings a soft flush of color on my cheeks and brightens my complexion while the highlighter shade adds a touch of luminosity that is neither too sparkly or shimmery. It can effortlessly be applied to various parts of the face– the top of my cheekbones, underneath the brow bone, and on top of the cupid’s bow.

In terms of texture, they are creamy, emollient, and feel soft to the touch.  It feels very lightweight, and leaves me with a very natural looking finish. It blends in effortlessly and does not crease or cake which I truly appreciate it. Recently, I have been using their new Ambient Luminous Light Primer (more on this later) The Illume Sheer Color Trio is used after applying their Immaculate Foundation and this is an absolutely beautiful combination, leaving my complexion looking flawless. Swatches to follow below.

In terms of wear time, it lasted for a good 5 hours, which is what I’ve come to expect from most cream products I’ve used. Bottom line, I’m very impressed with the finish which is incredibly natural, yet still glowy. I think this trio would work for most skin tones, though I think the bronzer shade would not work for very deep skin tones. I am very impressed with my first introduction to their line of cream products and I look forward to using this palette this summer.
